Blog — swing analysis

How to analyse your own golf swing — and the three faults to look for first

Two filming angles and a coach's checklist are enough to diagnose most swings. Here's the checklist, the drills and the targets that prove the fix worked.

First, film it right

Analysis is worthless from the wrong angle. Two clips cover everything: one down the line — behind you, camera at hand height, aimed straight along your target line — and one face-on, square to your chest. Whole club and both feet in frame, normal speed, in decent light.

If you only film one, film down the line. That's where path, plane and low point live.

Fault one: the slice (path and face)

The most common miss in golf is an out-to-in path with the face open to it. On video, look at the down-the-line clip from hip height on the way down: if the hands and clubhead are outside your target line, the body is throwing the club over the top.

  • The fix — Headcover Gate

Headcover a foot outside and just behind the ball. 20 driver swings that miss it. Cue: feel the club exit left of target. Target: 8 of 10 clean misses with a ball that starts right of the flag and draws back.

Fault two: fat and thin shots (low point)

Chunked and bladed irons are the same problem in two costumes: the bottom of the swing is behind the ball. On the face-on clip, watch your head — if it drifts behind the ball through impact, low point does too.

  • The fix — Towel Behind the Ball

Folded towel two inches behind the ball, 7-iron, 20 swings that miss it. Cue: hands lead the clubhead, chest over the ball at impact. Target: 15 of 20 clean, with divots starting at or ahead of the ball line.

Fault three: the sway (no stable turn)

A backswing that slides the hips toward the trail foot kills sequencing and forces the upper body to rescue the shot. Face-on, check the trail knee: if it moves past the trail foot, you swayed rather than turned.

  • The fix — Shoulder Stick Drill

Club across the shoulders, turn back and through over a stable trail leg, 2 sets of 10, then 10 balls. Cue: sternum points at the ball at impact. Target: 7 of 10 centred strikes.
